Enrollment periods

Individual & families

Open Enrollment for individuals and families is the time when you can make changes to your insurance plan, switch carriers, or enroll in new coverage if you don’t already have one.

Open Enrollment dates:

  • Begins on November 1.
  • Ends on January 15.

Special Enrollment is essential when you need to modify or enroll in a health insurance plan outside of the open enrollment period.

To be eligible, you must experience a qualifying life-changing event within a specific timeframe. 

To qualify for spacial enrollment you need a qualifying life changing event withing a certain time frame.

Examples include:

  • Getting married or divorced.
  • Child birth.
  • Relocation to a different service area
  • Losing Medicaid or group plan.
  • Gained eligible immigration status.

Medicare

The Initial Election Period occurs when an individual is new to Medicare, spanning a 7-month window. This period includes the 3 months before becoming eligible, the month of eligibility, and the 3 months that follow. During this timeframe, individuals have the opportunity to enroll in Medicare and other essential programs, including Medicare Advantage, and Prescription Drug (Rx) plans

The Initial Election Period occurs when an individual is new to Medicare, spanning a 7-month window. This period includes:

  • The 3 months before becoming eligible,
  • The month of eligibility,
  • The 3 months that follow.

During this timeframe, individuals have the opportunity to enroll in Medicare and other essential programs, including Medicare Advantage, and Prescription Drug (Rx) plans.

During the initial 6 months starting the month you turn 65, Medicare Supplements are available for purchase without the need to answer any medical questions, also known as a guaranteed issue right. After this period, individuals may still acquire Medicare Supplements at any time, but they will be required to answer medical questions

During the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 through December 7, any Medicare beneficiary has the opportunity to make changes or enroll in Medicare programs. This includes the ability to:

  • Enroll in or change your Medicare Advantage plan and insurance carriers.
  • Transition between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare.
  • Enroll in or drop a Part D prescription plan.

It’s important to note that all changes made during AEP will take effect on January 1.

 

 

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment occurs from January 1 through March 31 and is exclusively for individuals already enrolled in Medicare Advantage (Part C). Within this period, you can:

  • Make one change to your Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Opt to drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.

It’s important to note that the changes will take effect at the beginning of the following month after the change

To make changes to you medicare plan outside of defined enrollment period. During this period you can change or drop your Medicare advantage or prescription plan.

In order to qualify you need a trigger event that change your circumstances.

Common events are:

  • Moved out of your plan service area.
  • Lost or gained Medicaid eligibility.
  • Returned to the US after living abroad.
